solar phone charger

I'm interested in building one of Brian's designs, the solar cell phone charger. I want to plug it in to a Motorola Razr. When I bought the phone, I got a 'hands free' device that plugs into the same place as the charger. If I clip the hands free device plug and use it soldered to the solar cells, will that work as well? Also am considering incorporating a small (very small) led into the mix as well. Any thoughts on that?

Hey davendee, thanks for checking out the solar charger project. I know Guru Brian is pretty swamped now, gearing up for the Royer and Porter tech makeovers in Fort Wayne next week, but I know he's really helpful with answering peoples' questions when he gets a chance. Thanks for your patience! :)

First things first you must find the contacts thats are power, it sounds as though it is a mini usb port but i don't know off the top of my head. The hands free device may or may not be pulling power I don't believe it is so you may have an issue with that tactic, the very best thing you can do is to get either a car or house charger and cut the end off of that. This way there is no doubt. You can add an LED if you want but be wary because with these solar cells every little bit counts!!!!! Also most modern phones have a indicator as to when they are getting charged and a little LED in the sun light isn't going to really be seen anyway so to answer your question no I would not bother with the LED. Oh and be sure you have the voltage going the right way positive to positive and negative to negative.
